AAFP Live Online Workshop Series
December 2026
Two days of advanced forensic training presented in partnership with the American Academy of Forensic Psychology. From cognitive decline in older examinees to court-martial evaluations under the Uniform Code of Military Justice, build the specialized knowledge these referral questions demand.
The workshops
Two days of focused, expert-led training
These two workshops address specialized populations that forensic evaluators increasingly encounter: older adults whose cognition bears directly on a psycholegal question, and service members evaluated within the military justice system.
The Aging Mind in Court: Cognition and Forensic Mental Health Assessment
Chriscelyn Tussey, PsyD, ABPP
December 3, 2026 · 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM Pacific
Provides a practical framework for distinguishing normative aging from clinically meaningful cognitive change, and for determining when that distinction matters to questions of competency, criminal responsibility, and capacity.
- Describe patterns of cognitive and functional change associated with normative aging, neurocognitive disorders, and psychiatric, developmental, and medical factors relevant to forensic mental health assessment (FMHA)
- Describe an age-responsive, culturally informed assessment strategy that accounts for language, education, acculturation, sensory and motor limitations, medical complexity, fatigue, and response validity
- Describe how diagnosis, cognitive impairment, and functional abilities inform psycholegal questions in criminal and civil matters
- Describe a structured framework for deciding when cognitive screening is appropriate, when neuropsychological referral is warranted, and how to communicate conclusions within scope of competence
Forensic Evaluations in the U.S. Military
Marcus Van Sickle, PhD, ABPP, APMP
December 4, 2026 · 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM Pacific

- Describe how military forensic evaluations differ from civilian state and federal evaluations in referral source, jurisdiction, records, roles, and reporting
- Describe the core legal standards for R.C.M. 706 competency and mental responsibility inquiries, including R.C.M. 909 and R.C.M. 916(k)
- Describe appropriate violence, sexual recidivism, intimate partner violence (IPV), stalking, and targeted-violence risk assessment approaches when requested for sentencing
