On Demand | Self-Paced Professional Training

This on-demand professional training program on Using Third-Wave Cognitive Behavioral Therapies as an Adjunct to Forensic Treatment is presented by Mollimichelle Cabeldue, Ph.D, and Lyndsay Brooks, Psy.D.

Third-wave cognitive behavioral therapies (CBT), including Mindfulness-Based CBT, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy, represent an extension of traditional CBT and emphasize process over content, personal values, mindfulness, and acceptance. As there has been an increasing movement toward using evidence-based practices in treatment, these modalities reflect new approaches which can be utilized in various settings. Forensic populations, including pretrial defendants undergoing competency restoration and not guilty by reason of insanity acquittees hospitalized for risk of dangerousness, have long-needed evidence-based treatments to address clinical needs, including impulsivity, aggression, psychosis, and emotion dysregulation.

This program reviews the various ways in which third-wave approaches can be used as an adjunct to forensic treatment with appropriate adaptations. Case examples are used to illustrate ways in which patients may benefit from each of the discussed modalities. Research highlighting how these modalities can be utilized to decrease clinician burnout is discussed.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:

  • 1 Demonstrate an understanding of the history of third-wave approaches
  • 2 Describe at least two treatment needs of each of two types of forensic populations, including NGRI patients and pretrial defendants
  • 3 Describe at least two interventions of each of the three approaches, including mindfulness-based cognitive behavior therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and dialectical behavior therapy
  • 4 Describe how various interventions from third-wave approaches can be applied to forensic populations to address their treatment needs
  • 5 Describe two ways in which third-wave approaches can be utilized to treat providers in forensic settings to decrease burnout
  • Intended Audience

This training is intended for licensed clinicians who work with forensic populations and are interested in applying third-wave Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) approaches in forensic settings. It focuses on evidence-based interventions for complex clinical issues such as impulsivity, aggression, psychosis, and emotional dysregulation, tailored to individuals involved in the legal system.

    Examples of Relevant Professionals:

    • Mental Health Professionals
    • Psychologists
    • Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs)
    • Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs)
    • Clinicians working with forensic patients or individuals involved in the legal system
    • Providers seeking to enhance their skills in third-wave CBT approaches (e.g., DBT, ACT, mindfulness-based interventions)
  • Experience Level

This training is appropriate for licensed and pre-licensed mental health professionals at varying levels of experience with third-wave cognitive behavioral therapies in forensic settings.

    • Beginner: Participants are new to third-wave CBT approaches and/or their application in forensic settings and seek foundational knowledge of key concepts, interventions, and relevant forensic populations.

    • Intermediate: Participants have some familiarity with third-wave CBT modalities and forensic populations and are looking to deepen their understanding of specific interventions, adaptations, and case applications in forensic contexts.

    • Advanced: Participants have substantial experience with third-wave CBT and forensic mental health and are interested in advanced applications, integration of multiple modalities, and strategies for addressing complex clinical and provider needs.
  • Practice Setting

Clinicians practice in secure, legally involved behavioral health environments serving justice-involved individuals with high acuity and complex risk profiles. Work is interdisciplinary and highly structured, emphasizing safety protocols, risk assessment/management, and coordination with courts/corrections while delivering third-wave CBT interventions. Services span inpatient and community-based care with adaptations for security level, competency status, and reentry needs.

    Examples of Practice Settings:

    • State forensic hospitals and competency restoration units
    • Jails, prisons, and detention centers
    • Court clinics and problem-solving/mental health courts
    • Community forensic outpatient clinics and reentry programs
    • Secure residential treatment programs
    • Probation and parole behavioral health services
    • Juvenile justice behavioral health programs
    • Telehealth services for justice-involved clients
