Presented by Brianne Layden, Ph.D., in partnership with Protect International Risk and Safety Services.
This on-demand professional training program on Specialized Violence – Self-Directed Violence is presented by Brianne Layden Ph.D., in partnership with Protect International Risk and Safety Services.
Suicidal self-directed violence occurs in nearly every country and causes substantial personal and societal burdens. This program reviews conceptual and definitional issues related to suicidal self-directed violence, with a focus on distinguishing this behavior from non-suicidal self-injury. In addition, the nature of the problem is discussed on a global scale and within specific populations and settings. Currently, many professionals rely on unstructured clinical judgment in their assessment of risk for suicide despite numerous calls for a more structured approach. As such, assessing suicidal self-directed violence methods are identified along with a review of evidence-based risk factors for suicide. Several structured professional judgment (SPJ) tools to evaluate the risk for self-directed violence are discussed, including an introduction to a new set of SPJ guidelines for assessing and managing risk for suicide across diverse settings and sectors.
Upon completion of this program you will be able to:
Describe the concept of suicidal self-directed violence and its association with, and distinction from, non-suicidal self-injury
Describe awareness and understanding of risk factors related to suicidal self-directed violence
Describe the benefits and application of structured professional judgment guidelines in the assessment and management of suicidal self-directed violence
