Observant and Supportive Parenting for Crisis Prevention

Presented by Chitra Thummarukudy

This is a custom developed training for the City of Palo Alto on Observant and Supportive Parenting for Crisis Prevention presented by Chitra Thummarukudy.

This program equips parents and caregivers with practical tools to identify early signs of distress in adolescents and respond effectively to prevent emotional or behavioral crises. Designed with a trauma-informed and developmentally sensitive lens, the training emphasizes communication, empathy, and early intervention.

Participants learn to:

  • Recognize warning signs of emotional, behavioral, and mental health concerns
  • Understand the escalation cycle and apply de-escalation strategies grounded in safety and empathy
  • Use conflict resolution and active listening to build trust and open lines of communication
  • Support children through stressful academic or social changes, as illustrated through case studies
  • Navigate mental health resources, including school-based, community, and emergency services
  • Practice self-care for parents to maintain emotional balance and model healthy coping

Rooted in evidence-based frameworks, such as Bronfenbrenner’s Bioecological Model, and recent epidemiological data on youth mental health, this program helps parents create safe, connected, and responsive environments that support their children’s development and well-being.

This program is ideal for parents, guardians, and family-serving professionals who are committed to strengthening family bonds and supporting youth during challenging times.
