This on-demand professional training program on Introduction to Motivational Interviewing is presented by Matthew Rensi, PhD, LPCC in partnership with Community Solutions.

In this program, participants learn about the Motivational Interviewing approach to helping people change and see the crucial importance of matching interventions to individuals’ stages of change in order to improve the likelihood of success. In addition to examining the principles of MI, participants learn and practice specific skills and techniques that support the primary goals of MI, which include establishing rapport, eliciting change talk, and establishing commitment language. 

This program would be focused on new professionals or mid-career professionals who are looking to further develop their skills in Motivational Interviewing. 

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:

  • 2 Describe how clients consider their own reasons for change
  • 3 Describe how clients consider their own reasons for change
  • 4 Demonstrate basic Motivational Interviewing skills to help clients resolve ambivalence in favor of change
  • 5 Describe how Motivational Interviewing is used in different practice settings
  • 6 Describe the use of OARS skills to facilitate client engagement and goal setting

    This training is designed for early- to mid-career mental health professionals who want to deepen their expertise in Motivational Interviewing (MI). It is ideal for generalist clinicians, counselors, therapists, and other professionals working in mental health, substance use, behavioral health, or counseling settings who are seeking practical, evidence-based skills to better support clients through behavior change.

    This program is designed for licensed and pre-licensed mental health professionals who are new to Motivational Interviewing or seeking to strengthen foundational skills.

    Beginner:
    Participants have limited or no prior formal training in Motivational Interviewing and are seeking to understand its core principles, processes, and techniques.

    Early-Career/Mid-Career:
    Participants may have some exposure to Motivational Interviewing concepts and are looking to deepen their practical skills in applying MI strategies, such as OARS and eliciting change talk, across diverse practice settings.

    Participants in this program typically work in environments where they provide direct support to individuals experiencing mental health, behavioral health, or substance use challenges. Matthew T Rensi, Ph. D., LPCC. is a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor who also holds a Ph. D. in counselor education and supervision. He has extensive experience providing therapy to people struggling with psychosis, homelessness, various mental health issues and the legal system. In addition to this, he provides trainings throughout Santa Clara County on various aspects of mental health treatment including assessment, individual therapy, and safety/crisis situations. Matt has also conducted research on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders using linguistic analysis.
