On Demand | Self-Paced Professional Training

This on-demand professional training program on Conquering IPV Disparities for the LGBTGEQIAP+ Community is presented by Christie Jenkins, PhD.

Research shows that the LGBTGEQIAP+ community experiences disparities in some key areas as it related to interpersonal violence. Social justice-based interventions are best poised to make the biggest impact for this population. As counselors, we are uniquely positioned to advocate for the most vulnerable populations. As agents of change, we have to be culturally affirming. We need to not only advocate for our own clients, but involve counselors in social change at the local, state, and national levels.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:

  • 1 Describe the challenges for LGBTGEQIAP+ seeking services for IPV
  • 2 Describe how to advocate for LGBTGEQIAP+ survivors of IPV
  • 3 Describe resources to better serve the LGBTGEQIAP+ community
  • Intended Audience

This training is intended for professionals who are interested in addressing disparities in interpersonal violence within the LGBTQIA+ community, with a focus on social justice advocacy, trauma-informed care, and culturally affirming interventions. It is particularly relevant for those specializing in counseling, mental health, advocacy, and policy work related to LGBTQIA+ individuals and communities.

    Examples of Relevant Professionals:
    • Mental Health Professionals
    • Counselors working with LGBTQIA+ individuals or communities
    • Social justice advocates and activists
    • Staff at community-based organizations and advocacy groups
    • Professionals in educational or policy-focused roles
  • Experience Level

This training is appropriate for licensed and pre-licensed mental health professionals at various stages of experience working with LGBTGEQIAP+ clients impacted by interpersonal violence.

    • Beginner: Participants are new to working with LGBTGEQIAP+ clients or have limited experience addressing interpersonal violence in this population.

    • Intermediate: Participants have some experience providing services to LGBTGEQIAP+ clients and are seeking to deepen their understanding of culturally affirming, social justice-based interventions for survivors of interpersonal violence.
  • Practice Setting

Practitioners work in trauma-informed, culturally affirming clinical, community, and policy environments that center LGBTQIA+ survivors of interpersonal violence. Work is interdisciplinary and community-engaged, blending direct services with social justice advocacy, prevention, and systems change at local, state, and national levels. Services are delivered across modalities and levels of care, with pathways for both licensed and pre-licensed professionals.

    Examples of Practice Settings:
    • Community mental health clinics and LGBTQ+ community centers
    • Campus counseling centers and school-based programs
