ABPP: Ethics and Psychopharmacology for Psychologists
Presented by: Kenneth Carter, PhD, ABPP

This on-demand professional training program on Ethics and Psychopharmacology for Psychologists is presented by Kenneth Carter, PhD, ABPP in partnership with the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP).
This on-demand professional training program focuses on providing practical and useful information on how to handle the ethical decisions that surround psychopharmacology. Familiarize yourself with appropriate aspects of various ethics guidelines and examine how those guidelines might apply to your practice.
If you are like a lot of psychologists, many of your clients are taking psychotropic medicines prescribed by a number of different healthcare professionals. These medications stream in from psychiatrists, family physicians, and nurse practitioners, and inevitably, there are always those clients who have no idea from where they got the prescriptions or the reasons behind them. Despite who wrote the script, it is your responsibility to know your clients’ symptoms and reactions to medications and to coordinate their care. This can be tricky because psychologists need to be well-versed in the language of medications and have the skills to communicate not only to their clients about medications but to prescribers as well.
Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:
Key topics covered in this training include:
Ethical Foundations in Psychopharmacology
-Overview of relevant ethics guidelines
-Application of guidelines to clinical practice
Understanding Medication Use in Clinical Contexts
-Common scenarios involving psychotropic medications
-Challenges with multiple prescribers and unclear medication histories
Professional Responsibilities of Psychologists
-Monitoring symptoms and medication effects
-Coordinating care across providers
Communication and Collaboration Skills

-Effectively communicating with prescribers
