On Demand | Self-Paced Professional Training

This on-demand professional training program on Ethics and Psychopharmacology for Psychologists is presented by Kenneth Carter, PhD, ABPP in partnership with the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP).

This on-demand professional training program focuses on providing practical and useful information on how to handle the ethical decisions that surround psychopharmacology. Familiarize yourself with appropriate aspects of various ethics guidelines and examine how those guidelines might apply to your practice.

If you are like a lot of psychologists, many of your clients are taking psychotropic medicines prescribed by a number of different healthcare professionals. These medications stream in from psychiatrists, family physicians, and nurse practitioners, and inevitably, there are always those clients who have no idea from where they got the prescriptions or the reasons behind them. Despite who wrote the script, it is your responsibility to know your clients’ symptoms and reactions to medications and to coordinate their care. This can be tricky because psychologists need to be well-versed in the language of medications and have the skills to communicate not only to their clients about medications but to prescribers as well.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:

  • 1 Describe the proper role of psychologists who treat clients receiving both psychotherapeutic medications and psychotherapy
  • 2 Describe specific ethical issues and resolutions related to communicating with clients and prescribing professionals about psychotropic medications
  • 3 Describe the role of non-prescribing psychologists in communicating to clients and to prescribers about medications
  • Intended Audience

This training is intended for psychologists and mental health professionals who want to enhance their ability to navigate ethical decision-making in psychopharmacology. It is designed for those specializing in clinical, counseling, or health psychology, with expertise in understanding psychotropic medications, coordinating care, communicating with prescribers, and applying ethical guidelines in practice.
